Spring 2013 Cicadas - Northern Virginia

Moved again. This time to Northern Virginia about an hour south of DC in Woodbridge to be exact. Got here at the beginning of May, just in time to be greeted by swarms of cicadas that only show up every 17 years.

Was hiking around the Manassas National Battlefield Park when I first discovered them. They were everywhere --- in trees, hanging on to every tall piece of grass. Finally, they showed up in the backyard and often kamikazed into the car.

Apparently they are very sensitive to land development as they spend most of their lives underground before erupting in droves every 17 years to procreate. Therefore, the more urban the area the less one might see these flying mammoth bugs.

In any case, their hum and presence created quite a welcome for a new Virginia resident.
